Depth to basement / basin modelling

Airborne gravity, gravity gradiometry and magnetic data provide a cost effective method for identifying and modelling basin structure in frontier petroleum plays. Typically, modelling of gravity data focusses on the basement-basin sediment contact which provides the major density contrast and accounts for most of the basin gravity anomaly. Magnetic data provides a useful complement to the gravity data by identifying magnetic sources in the lower basement and mapping magnetic units, such as volcanics, within the basin sequence. The following workflow is generally undertaken:

  • Automated magnetic depth to basement solutions to provide first-pass independent estimate of basement depth;
  • Integration of structural interpretation, physical property logs, well and seismic data to create a 3D basin starting model;
  • Constrained (where well or seismic information is available) basin inversion model to create a depth to basement surface.
